MDeC and MMU are organizing a knowledge sharing session on “Scalable Social Media Analytics & the Collaborative On-line Social Media Observatory (COSMOS)” with Dr. Omer Rana from Cardiff University in UK. He will share his knowledge and experience on social media as an analysis platform and the limitations in making use of social data.
About COSMOS and Dr Omer
The volume of social media data continues to dominate research discussions in “Big Data”applications. With significant increase in the number of smart phones and mobile devices, each individual with such a device has now become a sensor — able to interpret events in their surroundings. This talk presents: (i) a social media analysis platform — the Collaborative On-line Social Media Observatory (outlining current usage and its software implementation); (ii) the limitations in making use of social data and how its interpretation can sometimes be misleading. Both (i) and (ii) are contextualised through case studies and scenarios of use.
Dr. Omer Rana is a professor of Performance Engineering at Cardiff School of Computer Science & Informatics. He was formerly the deputy director of the Welsh eScience Centre at Cardiff University.
